a lot of funds rebalance at the end of a month or the start of a new month and only trade at that time. Some funds only allow investors to enter of withdraw at that time. And they conveniently throw all that money into the closing auctions. So you will very often see large auction size on the last and sometimes first day of a month. Quarter end even more
