FDA says Novo Nordisk's TV ad for obesity pill includes 'false or misleading' claims
The Food and Drug Administration said Novo Nordisk's TV advertisement for its newly launched Wegovy pill for obesity included "false or misleading" claims about the medicine's abilities and benefits to patients.
In a letter to Novo dated Feb. 5, the FDA requested that the drugmaker take immediate action to address the violations, which could include ceasing all ads containing misleading claims.In the letter, the FDA said Novo’s ad misleadingly suggests its pill offers superior benefits to other approved GLP-1 weight loss drugs. The agency said phrases used in the spot, including “live lighter” and “a way forward,” imply greater weight loss than other treatments and added benefits beyond that, despite no evidence to support those claims.
The ad’s statements “misleadingly imply benefits beyond physical weight loss such as emotional relief, reduced psychological burden, hope, or direction for patients’ lives, positioning the drug as a solution to broader life challenges rather than a treatment for a specific condition, when this has also not been demonstrated,” the FDA said in the letter.
The FDA also flagged the ad for failing to properly present risk information in both audio and text, a requirement for television drug advertising.

FDA's besked til Novo Nordisk om, at en TV-reklame for Wegovy-pillen er "falsk eller misvisende", er en såkaldt Untitled Letter fra FDA's Office of Prescription Drug Promotion (OPDP). Det er en officiel påmindelse om overtrædelser i markedsføring, men det er ikke lige så alvorligt som et formelt Warning Letter, som bruges til mere grove eller gentagne problemer.
FDA kræver, at Novo Nordisk straks stopper eller ændrer reklamen, men der er ingen streng frist på 15 dage, ingen trussel om bøder, produktbeslaglæggelse eller andre hårde sanktioner på kort sigt. For et stort firma som Novo Nordisk er sådanne breve relativt rutine i den farmaceutiske industri, især for højtprofilerede produkter som Wegovy. Novo har tidligere modtaget lignende (og endda et Warning Letter i 2025 om en Oprah-special, der nedtonede risici).
